Though it's quite close to town as the crow flies, it's more problematic as the car drives. It takes driving several miles of gravel roads to get there, but it's quite a treat when you do arrive. This is a gated alpine retreat surrounded by National Forest, with the Rito Blanco River running through. Much of the terrain is heavily wooded with Aspen, Doug Fir, Blue Spruce and Ponderosa Pine, though there are also expansive mountain meadows. Square Top is the most commanding of the surrounding mountain peaks.
Directions: Head out Mill Creek Road from Hwy 84 at the fairgrounds and keep driving. Veer right onto Forest Service Road 665 and then turn right on Forest Service Road 29 to the entrance gate. Have a good map with you, as it's a remote area with several forest service roads winding through.
